Where you stay depends mainly on your budget, whether you need air-conditioning in the humid Ghats climate, and how far in advance you are booking. Temple guest houses vs private lodges

The temple guest houses (yatri nivas) are managed directly by the Kukke Shree Subrahmanya Temple administration. They are simple, clean and inexpensive, and are allotted by the temple office on its own schedule — which typically means an early check-out and limited advance booking. They are ideal if you want to stay closest to the temple for early-morning darshan or a two-day Sarpa Samskara, but availability is tight during festivals.

Private lodges and hotels fill the gap the rest of the time. These range from basic non-AC rooms to more comfortable AC rooms with hot water and parking. They are more flexible on check-in and check-out, easier to reserve ahead, and usually within 500 metres to about 2 km of the temple. Room types and what to expect

Most lodges offer single, double, triple and family rooms, in both AC and non-AC configurations. Non-AC rooms are the most economical and are perfectly comfortable in the cooler months from October to February. AC rooms are worth it in the warmer, more humid part of the year. Rooms are functional rather than luxurious — clean bedding, attached bathroom and hot water are the norm. If you are travelling as a family or group, ask for a triple or family room rather than booking several singles, as it usually works out cheaper.

Booking during festivals and weekends

Room demand at Kukke swings sharply with the temple calendar. On ordinary weekdays there is usually plenty of choice, and you can often find a room on arrival. During major festivals — Shashti being the biggest — and on weekends, rooms near the temple fill up fast and rates rise. If your trip falls on one of these dates, or you are travelling specifically for Sarpa Samskara or Ashlesha Bali, it is far less stressful to arrange the room before you leave home. Tips for choosing a room

• Stay close to the temple if you plan an early-morning darshan — the walk back after the pre-dawn queue is much easier.
• Confirm check-in and check-out times up front. Most lodges run a 24-hour (noon-to-noon) cycle, which matters if you arrive late at night.
• Ask whether the tariff changes on festival dates before you commit, so there are no surprises at the counter.
• For a two-day Sarpa Samskara, book both nights together rather than extending on the second day.
• Check the temple dress code and pack accordingly — traditional attire is required inside the temple regardless of where you stay.
